Ouachita Baptist University, or OBU for short, is a private, liberal arts, undergraduate institution located in Arkadelphia, which is the county seat of Clark County, being situated in the US state of Arkansas, at the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 10 550 inhabitants, during the 2005 census.
Ouachita was founded in September, 1886, as Ouachita College, due to expansion of the curriculum, in 1965, being renamed as Ouachita Baptist University, the name by which the institution is still known, today. Over the last decade, the university has undergone a period of rapid growth, being ranked, today, the number one baccalaureate college in the South, by U.S. News and World Report, also being ranked 2nd in the Best Value category for the South, by the same publication.
Athletics
OBU's athletic teams are known as the Tigers, which compete, in various sports, for both men and women, in NCAA Division II, in the Gulf South Conference, including in tennis, basketball, baseball, soccer, diving and football. Ouachita's rival, in athletics, is Henderson State University, the 2 institution competing, annually, in the ''Battle of the Ravine'', which is the 5th football rivalry in college sports.
